This week at the market


It’s a full market tomorrow with many monthly vendors making their visits. One of those vendors is Christiane of Kaffee & Klatsch- so named for the German custom of gossiping over afternoon coffee that developed among housewives in the late 19th century because women weren’t welcome in the public coffeehouses.  Christiane honors the tradition by handcrafting the pastries and baked goods that were often served alongside the coffee and the gossip. Try her linzer tart, apple crumble squares, and other seasonal German delicacies.

Other notable attendees:

  • Wil-Hi Farm- pick up some lamb chops and make this easy recipe that pairs the tender meat with a South American chimichurri sauce.
  • Clean Ridge- their lilac lotion is divine!
  • Broken Bow Brewery- football fans rejoice with growlers for your viewing parties.
  • Samosa Shack- the bhel puri is a market favorite
  • Ready Set Sharp Knife Sharpeners

This Saturday is “Glean on Me” day–when the Farmers Market collects fresh produce for the Hastings food pantry. Please buy an extra head of lettuce or an extra squash for our neighbors who aren’t always sure where their next meal is coming from. The food pantry (located in the Community Center) serves 25 families. Each week the Market Committee purchases eggs and fruit to donate. And once a month, we turn to you to contribute more fresh food. Please look for the collection basket at the Market Tent and thank you for your generosity.

Coming up next week–September 23--gather the young ‘uns for a fun class that will make them love their veggies. “Cooking with Kids” is a free class for children ages 5 to 12, accompanied by a parent. The class will be held between 10 and 11:30. Instructors include health coaches and a chef, and features a scavenger hunt and guidance on making yummy dishes without heat.

Also next week is the bone marrow drive coordinated by Hastings native Sam Brecker. Sam, who is a Hastings police officer and Captain of the Volunteer Fire Department, is holding the drive in memory of his father, Michael Brecker, a world famous, 15-time Grammy winning jazz saxophone player. In 2005, he was diagnosed with Leukemia and sadly passed in 2007.  Please stop by to enroll in the bone marrow registry- a few moments of your morning could save someone’s life.
