Dear shoppers,

Saturday's market will be a doozie. As it should be, Labor Day weekend marking the symbolic "end" of summer. Why not end with a bang?

Last week we brought you lobster and crab and this week we bring them back! Don't get too attached. Their schedule will be the first and third Saturday of each month and last week was a "bonus." A few of you sent pictures of your lobster dinners. Thank you! I often wish I could follow customers home to watch them prepare their market meals. Pictures and recipes are always welcome!

Above is a picture from a customer named Laura who moved to Hastings in May and says the market made her feel so welcome here right from the start. She says the lobster at the market made up for her first summer that did not include a trip to Maine.

One of our favorite, regular shoppers is my lovely neighbor, Michelle Veyvoda-Schwartz. I am so happy that her family was chosen to grace the cover of a new book coming out this week by local photographer (and fellow market shopper & musician) Doug Schneider.

The book is a documentary coffee-table book, featuring portraits of 122 Westchester families who stand together in the face of a global pandemic to help neighbors in crisis. All proceeds benefit the local nonprofit On the Line— spearheaded by the folks behind Harper's and Saint George restaurants—that has delivered over 14,500 meals to food-insecure communities in Westchester.

“The families I photographed throughout the county reflect the unique ethnic, racial and cultural diversity that defines Westchester. Families for Humanity is a portrait of us all.” Doug will be selling and signing the book THIS Saturday at the entrance of the market. (Doug also documented how the Hastings Farmer's Market pivoted and adapted when Covid called for that. We feel lucky to be included!).

Freefall Sangria is back just in time for a weekend of food and frivolity. Made with local stone fruit and light on sugar, this is not your garden-variety sangria. Pick up one bottle of white and one red to please all of your barbecue guests this weekend. Other once a month vendors who are coming THIS Saturday include Bombay Chutney and Momo Dressing, so plan your shopping list (and budget) accordingly!

Why not make kebabs this weekend to keep things nice and simple? These grilled scallops skewers will be on my weekend menu. Serve with the last of the corn and heirloom tomatoes. Or, with some baby greens crowned with robust sprouts from Food is Med.

No one knows what Thanksgiving is going to look like this year but it's safe to say, there will be a turkey on your table. R&M Farms is starting to take orders for their birds THIS Saturday. These are pastured broad-breasted white turkeys that feed on ground corn, ground soybean and mineral packs - all GMO- and antibiotic-free. They will be $5.99 a pound.

See you at the market!
