Our cup runneth over on Saturday...
When Sofia Todisco of Sofia's Feast came to the market one Saturday a few months ago to drop off some samples we both knew instantly she would be a good fit.
Sofia took one look at the market, I took one look at her rustic pasta and we spontaneously hugged. Sofia is a recipe developer (for NYT's Melissa Clark, no less) who learned to cook at her nonna's knee, but also worked in restaurants and spent time in Bologna researching all things grain and pasta. She uses ancient grains such as Danke rye from River Valley Community Grain, to make her small-batch hyper-seasonal pastas like the Chive Blossom Gnocchi she is bringing this week. Similarly to La Trafila, she also makes homespun sauces to accompany her pasta, like her Nonna's thick and meaty Ragu or the summer-y zucchini and baby leek sauce she'll have on hand. Sofia is a one-woman operation so is only able to come once a month. Let's show her some Hastings love, shall we?
You can find her next to Charlotte's Home Kitchen, her market “bestie,” and another one-woman operation peddling gorgeous products. In Charlotte's case, they are painterly cakes painterly cakes made with ingredients from her backyard like bergamot and lavender and rhubarb. Check out their joint giveaway in honor of Pride month at @sofiasfeast and @charlotteshomekitchen.
Sierra Quiros of Hamov Eh, with her Armenian spreads (parsley tahini, walnut date and red pepper walnut). Like Sofia, Sierra was also inspired by her grandmother: “My best memories of my grandma are of her in the kitchen. She was also a former belly dancer, so when music would come on, you’d see her do a little shimmy,” says Quiros. “I wanted to take that same passion and energy and turn it into something.” Mission accomplished. You can read all about her in this Westchester Magazine profile, where you find out that it's her father who bakes the zhingalov hats at her booth: Armenian flatbreads she then fills with market greens and herbs. Her sauces come in new vessels by the way. Different look but same great product.
Speaking of new looks, True Food is officially changing its name to Wild Radish. Same delicious organic burritos, wraps, soups, salads, baked goods made with local ingredients, just a different name.
If you are still looking for Father's Day gifts this weekend, look no further.
You can spoil Dad with a selection from Larchmont Charcuterie. Include a peppery saucisson sec, some smoked duck breast, and some beef braciole and why not throw in an Opinel, the classic French picnic pocket knife to slice said saucisson which Daniel also sells at his booth. Ash Hopper has some cool soaps like their Swedish Pine Tar and Indigo Lime. Or pick up a couple of spirits from Springbrook Hollow Distillery. Their rye is standout.
If Dad likes a classic Bee's Knees cocktail (I know my dad did) consider buying him some Kas Spirits honey liqueur. Marushka is joining us for possibly for the last time as they are closing down their operation. (If you want to preorder a case at a discounted rate, please email Marushka at by 4 p.m. Friday.)
Or if you're taking Dad on a camping or canoe trip, pick up some hard cider from Abandoned Hard Cider.
You can also cook up a market breakfast for Dad on Sunday featuring pancakes made with River Valley Community Grain buckwheat flour, maple syrup from Mountaintop Maple, and berries from Orchards of Concklin or Wright's. Throw in some bacon from Goode & Local – formerly known as Mangalitsa and eggs from R & M Farm. Or, pick up some steak from Harlem Valley Homestead. Or, get some thick and juicy lamb chops from Wil-Hi Farm, also here this week.
This week we have a new indie rock band called Stump in the music tent. It's a group that was formed a few years back at ESF – SUNY's school of environmental science and forestry. So expect a lot of moss and lichen lovin' guys who like to forage – and jam. Does it sound like we're having too much fun at the market? That's because we are! And that's exactly why you should join us as a volunteer. We are always looking for extra hands. Curious? Swing by the market tent to talk!
Want to buy Dad some new HFM logo wear? You're in luck! We just got our new summer merch. We have terrific charcoal hoodies in large sizes and lots of cool tees in new colors, too!
