Turkey, yogurt...Dough Nation Pizza!
I have a friend who waited until the last minute to buy her pumpkin this week. She didn’t think her kids still wanted to carve a pumpkin at their age, but they did. She ran to the store to get one on Tuesday (Halloween) but they were plum out. She came home with a very large butternut squash instead which they carved just the same. Unless you’re feeding vegetarians, don't be caught with a giant butternut squash crowning your Thanksgiving table rather than a turkey.
The big day is only 26 days away and you really should talk to Josh over at R&M Farm to reserve yours. They still have plenty left! Still don’t know how many folks will be around your table? Go big and enjoy leftovers. You won’t regret it!
If you’re hosting this year, this is a good time to feel out some side dishes. It’s nice to have family favorites (I’m looking at you green beans and almonds) but you should try to weave in a new dish each year to replace an old standby that maybe hasn't aged so well. I’m always looking for something bright green on that holiday table which seems to favor all things tawny and brown. Consider this recipe for broccoli aligot or this colorful and bright beet salad with coriander yogurt dressing.
Speaking of yogurt...Folks are always asking us to bring yogurt to the market and we are so happy to finally deliver! White Moustache joins us this week. Their yogurt is handmade, hand-strained and hand-packed with nothing but pure milk from Hudson Valley cows and probiotics using ancient Persian techniques that this small company works hard to keep alive. They were highly recommended to us by the folks at Annie’s Ginger Elixir so you know they’ve got to be good, right? Please give them a warm Hastings welcome, won’t you?
Daylight savings is upon us. Make the transition a little easier by making a nice pot of fish stew on Sunday to enjoy when the skies darken at 5:30 p.m. Oy. Incidentally, the fennel and radicchio salad recommended as a side to this dish is a great fall/winter salad and we have gorgeous fennel and radicchio at the market right now.
Prefer beef stew? Harlem Valley Homestead has a special on their sirloin beef stew meat packages They are also having a sale on their cauliflower which will only be around for a week or so longer. They are also having a “buy two, get one free” sale on heads of garlic. Sarah, their farm manager, says that one of their garlic varieties, the Wingdale Red, is their very own as they have been harvesting and replanting it for at least six years now. Apparently, after six generations of continuous cultivation, a specific type of garlic becomes a new variety. You learn something every day at the farmer’s market.
Are you still sneaking chocolate from your kids’ Halloween haul? Do yourself a favor and upgrade this Saturday to confections from Luxx Chocolat or Marcelina Orange. Dora, of Marcelina Orange will be closing up shop soon, so do stock up on her marmalade if you are a fan.
The Dough-Nation Pizza truck is back this Saturday and, this is the first Saturday of the month which means our loyal and longtime house band, Milton, will be performing. And it looks like DRY weather again. So come to shop, stay for the vibe and the music. Don’t forget to bring your textiles for the recycling bin and used books for the book bin.
And check out our new spiffy market bags!
See you at the market!
