Brrrrr. Soup. Brrrr.
The guests have gone, the leftovers have been eaten or composted and now, we’re in that funky stretch between Thanksgiving and December holidays when you want to try and eat healthy before the sugar cookies and cheese platters come your way.
This is a time for healthy soups that you can make in the morning after your chilly dog walk and just reheat for dinnertime. This Provençal soup is super easy to make and you can find virtually all of the ingredients (watercress, Swiss chard, and leeks) at the Sun Sprout tent.
Also righteous and delicious, this super greens soup with truffle oil. You can ditch the truffle oil and use earthy Kontoulis Olive oil instead. This is a great recipe to showcase your White Moustache yogurt, too. Did you happen to catch the namesake of this popular small-batch yogurt company when he visited a couple of weeks ago? Note the impressive tash!
If soup for dinner isn’t enough, add a curry burger from Plantidote Food Co.
Speaking of healthy eating, we are so excited to welcome The Lentil Project to our market. Before now, I probably would not have put “excited” and lentils in the same sentence. But these folks are setting out to change the lowly lentil’s image with their mung lentil snacks that are as addictive as peanuts (only better for you). And, they sell these wonderful Mason jars filled with lentils, and spices like coriander, turmeric and dried fenugreek leaves, which morph into a hearty soup for four in a snap. You even use the jar as your liquid measuring cup. Brilliant!
Please give them a warm Hastings welcome!
Tired of kale chips? Try the air-fried beet chips at the Kariba Farms tent. Kariba Farms used to sell at our market years ago and are returning with a wider range of products than before. They source organic nuts and vegetables and spice and season (and air-fry) them locally. Their spicy plantain chips are insanely good. Just the thing to have in your pantry when guests pop by during the holidays.
A reminder that we are on a winter schedule now. That means we open at 9:30 instead of 8:30. And we are only open on a first and third Saturday schedule from now until May. We will, however, host an additional New Year's Eve “Eve” market on Saturday, Dec. 30th. So, if you were on the fence about hosting a New Year’s Dinner Party, know that we will be there to lend a helping hand. There will also be a special market on Christmas Eve in Irvington, on Sunday, Dec. 24th in case you were thinking of preparing a Seven Fishes feast.
If you need a market schedule, we have plenty of winter cards left at the market tent.
Also, a reminder that our fab hot pink and black market bags would make great gifts. As would anything from Ici et La Creations and Ash Hopper Botanical Skin Care, both here this week!
See you at the market!
p.s. Don’t forget to head to the Hastings Library tonight for my 7 p.m. conversation with Danielle Claro as part of their Local Luminaries program. Should be fun!
