March Goodness
March already? We're in the home stretch of winter market days and we can't thank you enough for coming out on those chilly Saturdays to stock up on arugula, mushrooms, monkfish, apples and bread.
We finally got our first snow. Just when my chickens have started laying again.
It's hard to keep up! Not sure how long the snow will linger but it definitely has me wanting to simmer something this weekend. Perhaps this tawny braised pork with prunes and oranges. R&M Farm and Goode & Local by Don Rodrigo can sort you out with pork.
Or this bright and colorful fish coconut & ginger curry. You can find your grouper fillets at Pura Vida. If they didn't catch grouper this week, Paul or Dan will know what fillet would work best. Muru, at Food is Med ,will set you up in the spice department.
You'll be happy to know that SMOK'D returns this week with their game hens on a rustic rotisserie spit. Spitmaster Jeremy James underestimated our collective Hastings appetite for all things bbq'd and aromatic the last time he was here. He sold out within the hour. He promises to bring more this week. Still...you might want to hit him up early. Serve with some roasted Brussels sprouts from Madura Farm or roasted purple potatoes from Sun Sprout Farm. Don't forget the greens! Obercreek, Sun Sprout and Great Joy Farms all have spectacular spinach these days.
Luxx Chocolat returns after a long hiatus with her Hot Choxx hot chocolate and try squishy handcrafted designer marshmallows and her new line of vegan caramels made with cashew milk.
The snapdragon apples at the Orchards of Concklin have been particularly bright and snappy of late. One bite, and I think of Trevor, Concklin's longtime summer salesperson in Hastings, who spends his winters in his native, sunny Jamaica building his dream home.
Two of our favorite vendors are selling cookie dough. Wave Hill Breads has all the classics, from snickerdoodle to chocolate chip, while 3x3 Kitchen offers gluten-free options like chocolate pecan.
Make sure to stop by the Teagevity tent for some hot tea. Tran will be more than happy to mix two flavors from their pushpots for you. Last week I mixed their elderberry and orange hibiscus flavors and it tasted so warm and delicious going down.
Ok, this is our last reminder: The deadline is EARLY tomorrow for entering HFM in the Best of Westchester competition. We sure would appreciate it if you voted for your favorite farmers market.
Thanks in advance!
See you at the market!
