Pears a go go!
Come autumn in New York, the plethora of apple varieties tend to overshadow the pears. Do yourself a favor this week and stray! Bosc, Bartlett and red pears are at their peak, their tawny burnished skin reflecting the fallen leaves underfoot.
Just like apples, pears easily jump from savory to sweet without skipping a beat. Try this savory pear and leek galette.
Pick some firm pears to slice into this beauty of a pear, bacon and Brussels sprouts salad. Don't eat bacon? Throw in some caramelized Tivoli mushrooms instead! Use the salad mix from Thousand Leaf Gardens to make this salad extra zesty. The recipe calls for gorgonzola but you can use Painted Goat feta (hope you nabbed some last week) instead.
As the centuries-old French proverb goes: “God never made a better marriage than that of pears and cheese.” So add some pears to your next cheese tray instead of, or in addition to, the Concord grapes at the market.
This pear pudding cake pear pudding cake caught my eye and it's easy as pie. No doubt, baker Amy Germann of Elderberry Road will be getting creative with pears this week. I'm really hoping they turn up on one of her upside-down cakes.
Enjoy with some Tenmile Distillery Founder's Edition whiskey, neat, because as the leaves turn to brown...so should your spirits.
Our costume swap continues this week so if you have a bag of old costumes collecting dust in the closet, please drop them off at the market early in the morning. If you still don't know what you're wearing on Halloween, swing by the costume tent and find your bliss, like the owl-loving toddler who found a complete owl costume - still brand new in the bag - last week. Yay!
The Fearless Cook Food Truck will be parked under the bridge dishing out farm to table goodness. And The Altogether Band will be performing in the music tent to the delight of many Rivertowns fans who love this trio's original song-writing and amazing harmonizing.
Come enjoy this unexpected gift of glorious weather with us and take a break from stressing about whether everything is going to go, well, pear-shaped in November.
See you at the market!
ps. Thanks for all your donations to the food pantry last week!
