lamb burgers, herbs galore and peaches!
My kitchen windowsill is currently lined with large Mason jar “vases” filled with different herb bouquets from Halal Pastures from a special cilantro Dan Barber is fond of, to a broad and purple-leafed variety of shiso to Israeli mint. The organic farm grows dozens and dozens of varieties of herbs each more aromatic than the next. It's so lovely scattering them on summer salads or scrambled eggs. And having so many options!
Their variety of cucumbers is also dizzying. Just the ticket for this sweltering weather we’ve been experiencing. Why not buy several different types and make a cooling cucumber medley salad with tangy feta from Painted Goat and some of their fragrant, bushy mint.
Or use them along with Sun Sprout Farm's fava beans in this recipe for flatbread with cucumbers and fava beans with burrata.
Sun Sprout and Morgiewicz both have gorgeous, leggy carrots right now. Make this cooling extremely French carrot salad to serve alongside some lherbaceous lamb burgers from Wil-Hi Farm, this July 4th, along with this tomato green bean salad with chickpeas, feta and dill, now that green beans and cherry tomatoes are making their summer debut at the market.
Want to go all “trad” this holiday? Harlem Valley Homestead is having a 20 percent off sale on their hot dogs, ground beef and all of their head-turning heads of lettuce.
Mead Orchards will have their first peaches of the season. Maybe this is the summer you expand your peach recipe repertoire and toss them on the grill to pair with fish as in this grilled salmon and peaches with basil pistachio gremolata.
Is there someone who shies away from gluten in your family? Pick up a seasonal peach pie from 3x3 Kitchen. They are also bringing gluten-free quiches and summer savory tarts to market this week.
Charlotte’s Home Kitchen is bringing cakes that are gluten-free and vegan, too, though you’d never guess the way all of your guests will ask for seconds. Be smart, buy two. This week, she’s also bringing strawberry cream pots made with coconut milk, fresh strawberries, maple syrup and an oat flour crumb base. Perfect to bring to the beach or a picnic.
It’s Pride weekend in NYC. Celebrate with a “Pride Spark” juice from Freshly Made, chock full of with apples, lemon, ginger and watermelon.
MOMO Dressing is here and won’t return until August so do stock up on your favorite Japanese-style dressings, marinades and of course their ever popular edamame dip. Fingers crossed, Yukimi, the chef behind the Brooklyn-based operation, has time to make some of her bento boxes this weekend.
Jon Cobert, a grammy-nominated musician, is our musical talent this week. Come enjoy the last weekend of June with us!
