Oh, hello, April!
April has arrived and you know what that means: the return of Homegrown Nursery! Get your plot furrowed and hoe’d, because Nick reports that he’s bringing onions and leek starters, including Cabernet Onions and Tandora Leeks. He’ll have herbs and greens, including cilantro, arugula, and Za’atar marjoram. He’ll have broccoli, rhubarb, and Sweet Alyssum Flower and Alpha Calendula. From the Hudson Valley Seed Library, he’ll offer carrot, radish, beans, and mixed pollinator flower seeds. Also available? His fast-growing leafy greens in paper pots (hooray for reducing plastic usage!). The paper pots allow the growth of a strong root ball which can be planted straight into your waiting garden. Easy peasy!
Over at Obercreek Farm, they’re awash in a sea of succulent greens. Pick up yours to make saag paneer, spinach pesto, or simply wilt greens into any dish, or make a crisp salad with lettuce and radishes. Soon, they’ll have the first fresh alliums of the year: chives, with garlic scapes following closely behind. Be patient, because in another six to eight weeks, they’ll have their first tomatoes. We can’t wait for our first caprese salad, but it’s important to enjoy nature’s current bounty.
Titusville Farm is ushering in the new month with a sale on pullet eggs — $5 per dozen and 20% off for customers who buy three dozen or more. Smaller in size than regular chicken eggs, a pullet egg, or farmer’s egg, has a higher ratio of yolk to white. The greater yolk content gives pullet eggs a rich flavor and a creamier texture, which is why they are a sought-after ingredient among chefs. Stop by early to get yours! Maybe try this (almost endlessly variable) frittata recipe for Sunday brunch?
In addition to their abundance of greens, visit 1000 Leaf Gardens Farm to check out their riot of tulips! No Place Like Home will offer Chicken and Chorizo Paella and Spanish omelettes; pre-orders are strongly encouraged; place yours here. They’ll also have empanadas, bone broth, and mac ‘n cheese. Pre-order before 1pm on Friday for pick up at the market. Pre-order before 1pm on Friday for pick up at the market. Also upping their greens game? Harlem Valley Homestead, whose bins will hold arugula, pea shoots, baby kale, and frost sweetened spinach. Ask about bulk discount pricing on their very popular beef bone broth and pork tonkatsu broth, too!
