Running out of ideas for making lunch at home?
Consider making "tartines," a French bistro classic. Bien Cuit and Wave Hill both sell the ideal bread to make these open-faced sandwiches. And, right now, the market has all the ingredients to make two of Chef David Tanis' favorite tartine recipes: the roasted pepper tartine and the spinach and bacon tartine.
Pick up some smoked salmon from Hudson Valley Fisheries to create your own open-faced sandwiches. Or, pick up some corn (the last of the season!) and peppers to make this corn soup with a red pepper swirl. This will be probably be the last time that peppers and corn collide at the market this season!
Or you could just pre-order some bento boxes from Two Birds Provisions. They are chockfull of good stuff including tamagoyaki eggs, marinated thinly sliced beef, seasonal vegetables, pickled and fresh, and a pretty side of purple sushi rice. As with most Two Birds' creations, it is best to pre-order to guarantee availability as they make these in limited quantities.
Selek also has some baked falafel for a quick lunchtime wrap. And, True Food, of course has a large variety of seasonal salads, some grain-based, some not. This season, their ingredient combinations are particularly pleasing.
All the peppers at the market have me craving ribeye and peppers. Harlem Valley Homestead and R & M Farms are well stocked on beef cuts right now from skirt to sirloin. Don't forget to add chopped fresh shallots to any grilled steak! Or blistered cherry tomatoes if peppers don't sit well with you.
See you at the market!
