SOVA Farm returns this week fully stocked with whole chicken and chicken thighs and breasts, too.
If you love this farm's prize-winning eggs, just wait until you try their poultry. They had hoped to bring chicken to the market earlier in the season, but as recently as three weeks ago, they still had snow on the ground up in Norwich, NY.! As if the farming life weren't hard enough, climate change has added a whole new dimension of unpredictability.
Grab some thighs or breasts and toss them on the grill this weekend and dress them with some garlicky homemade garlic scape pesto. Growing Heart Farmis bringing in these long curly scapes in spades.
Deborah Madison is the reigning queen of all things vegetal, and in her cookbook, Vegetable Literacy, she offers this popular recipe for garlic scape pesto. Madison says the pesto should keep for a week or so in the fridge. So delicious on steamed cod, or grilled salmon by the way.
GARLIC SCAPE PESTO
Into a food processor put 1 cup of prepped, sliced scapes and 1/4 cup of walnuts. Whizz together briefly then slowly pour in 1/2 cup of olive oil and some salt and pepper and blend into a paste that's not too smooth.
Scrape into a bowl and add either white (shiro) miso OR grated parmesan/pecorino to taste, mashing with a fork as you go.
Incidentally, SOVA FARM will be coming to Hastings on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. (Starting now, we will be bold-facing the rotating vendors on our vendor list so you know which vendors you need to pay special attention to because they may not be back for a couple of weeks.)
Such is the case for Found Herbal who joins us this Saturday for the first time in a long time. Found Herbal, a full-service herbal apothecary, got its start at the Hastings Farmers Market many moons ago and has since opened one of the most popular (and beautiful) storefronts in Hastings. We are so happy to have them back at the market, once a month, with their herbal bug sprays and salves and balms to tame everything from sleeplessness to pandemic beards.
Two Birds Provisions is back for the summer with a whole new menu and energy. Check out their broth offerings, protein bowls, summer rolls and farm-to-table empanadas.
If you're planning ahead for Father's Day, make sure to stop at Springbrook Hollow Distillery and pick up some local spirits. Their gin and rye whiskey get very high marks from those in the know.
Does the father figure in your life have more of a sweet tooth?
According to confectioner Michele Kim, of La Petite Occasion, "caramel-loving dads tend to fall into one of two categories—Salted Dark Chocolate or Bacon Bourbon Maple." She will have plenty of each of these hand-cut, hand-crafted caramels this Saturday, "gift-ready" in 4 and 8-oz containers.
I want to remind everyone that there is a fantastic event happening Sunday, June 13th in the commuter lot that you don't want to miss. P-CoC - Parenting Children of Color – is hosting a food truck extravaganza and fundraiser event from 1 to 6 p.m. (see flyer attached!) I'll be there and truly hope to see you there, too, supporting this wonderful organization run by an extraordinary group of women.
We have some very special music this week so try and plan your shop from 10:15 to 12:15 p.m. so you can enjoy the Richard Cortez Jazz Band. Thanks to the Riolo Team at Compass for sponsoring our music.
See you at the Market!
