July 3, 2021
And, just like that...it's July. Though we are not out of the woods, we are certainly in a better place this holiday weekend than we were last year at this time.
We hope that you have a weekend full of cooking, grilling, hosting, guesting (and maybe even resting) ahead of you to celebrate. The Hastings Farmer's Market has everything you need to help make it special, including a cool new cacao and coffee spice rub for your grilled meats over at the Luxx
over at the Luxx Chocolat tent, where you can also find 11 (count em') different flavors of artisanal ice cream sandwiches, roasted strawberry among them.
Combined, R & M Farms and Harlem Valley Homestead have you covered in the beef (T-bones, ribeyes and skirt) heritage pork, chicken and sausage department. For many, this is a sacred hot dog and hamburger weekend and there will be plenty of both.
Just because you don't eat meat doesn't mean you can't enjoy a great hot dog. Check out these grilled carrot hot dogs from Epicurious. Ingenious and delicious. Sun Sprout Farm and Morgiewicz Produce grow the perfect sweet, leggy carrots for this.
Since raspberries and peaches are coming in, consider making this peach raspberry watercress salad with five spice bacon – an Ottolenghi recipe that gets only raves. You could make it without the bacon... but why would you?
If you are asked to bring appetizers to a party this weekend, pick up some hummus from Aya Hummus, back this week after a month hiatus. She will be featuring her cooling ayurvedic sweet potato hummus laced with rich kale pesto. So unique and fantastic on a thin slice of baguette or ciabatta, or sliced raw fennel. You could also put together a cheese and charcuterie platter with the help of Cooperstown Cheese, McGrath Cheese and Larchmont Charcuterie.
What to drink this weekend? We have SO many options: Neversink Spirits' botanical gin made with local apples... KAS Spirits, a honey-based liqueur, so delicious in a pitcher of herbal tea for something refreshing and different, and Heimat Liqueur unveiling a new flavor for the first time: elderflower!
We'd like to take the opportunity to congratulate Hastings High School graduate Róisín O'Flaherty for receiving our HFM Sustainability Scholarship. This is what Haven Colgate, our Hillside woods savior, had to say about Róisín in her application: "I've worked with hundreds of high school students as co-leader of the Vine Squad and through the Hillside Woods Restoration Project. Róisín is one of those rare teens who really stands out. She recognizes the challenges our civilization faces and demonstrates the courage, quiet resolve and stamina to work toward practical solutions....Ro is someone who will make a difference." Best of luck to Roisin as she goes and takes on the world.
See you at the Market!
