thank you farmers!

In preparing to write this blog, I came across an apt proverb,
“April and May make meal for the whole year.”

Originating in Spain, the words explain that much of a year’s food comes from agricultural work and preparation done in the spring. Naturally, my thoughts immediately turned (with gratitude) to our stalwart farmers: 4E Farms, Orchard Hill Organics, the Orchards of Concklin, Sun Sprout, Harlem Valley Homestead, and others.

In addition to harvesting diverse deliciousness for Saturday’s market, these folks are already laying the groundwork (pun intended) that will keep us fed all year long. Lucky us!

Of course, we do not live by produce alone. And that’s where R & M Farm comes in. Contact Ryan, at (973) 903-8546, before 6pm on Friday to pre-order your Easter ham (both boneless and bone-in). Ryan is also bringing new and unique salami products such as black truffle, genoa, hot and sweet Napoli, and many more. Dry aged and delicious! Salami (from R & M or Mangalitsa), cheeses from Cooperstown or McGrath, bread from Wave Hill, and pickles from Doc Pickle; there’s your charcuterie board, done and dusted! You’ll also want to stop by Harlem Valley Homestead’s tent to pick up cozy stew-fixings, pork (pulled pork sandwiches, anyone?), or chicken. If you’re ready for grilling season (I know I am!), they’ve also got steaks, chops, and sausages.

You’re going to want to check out Orchard Hill Organics spring-time radish explosion. The humble radish packs a powerful nutritional punch, with plentiful antioxidants as well as calcium and potassium. Jazz up holiday gatherings with this Sauteéd Radish and Greens side dish.

Depending on your weekend plans, you simply may need to purchase some Mojito Mint from Homegrown Nurseries, or, at the very least, some aptly named BBQ Rosemary. Head over to 3 x 3 Provisions to experience their menu’s newest addition: Beef Bourguignon Pie. Chef Derrick has perfected a recipe that has chunks of beef melting in your mouth after simmering in a red wine sauce for hours. Craving something sweeter? A Noble Pies Will You Marry Me Cherry or Hudson Valley Apple all-butter crust confection might be just the ticket. Or, if you’re feeling industrious, you can score some apples from Orchards of Concklin and locally grown and ground flour from River Valley Community Grains and whip up your own dessert masterpiece.

Rose Swan Pottery is making a special guest appearance and Luxx Chocolat has decadent and artisanal Easter basket goodies on the brain.Copper Faucet Soap Company is debuting goat-milk soaps on Saturday, along with their spring candle and diffuser line, which includes scents such as English Garden and Magnolia & Peony. Heavenly! Don Carvajal will be back in his new spot, espresso machine at the ready. Come to the market early, ready to be caffeinated!

Housekeeping Issues:
Please remember that, in an effort to keep car traffic moving smoothly and safely, cars must exit via Cropsey Lane. Drivers: please be aware that pedestrians share the Lane. Walkers: please know that cars use the exit and stay within the coned-off walking corridor. Please watch out for each other!

Stop by the Market Tent to say hello and check out our vibrant collection of Hastings Farmers Market t-shirts. Purchase one to show off your Hastings pride and help support your favorite place to be on Saturdays.

See you at the market!
