Settling into September routines

Early September's always a scramble. Just as our farmers are racing to get their fall crops in the ground, parents are getting accustomed to schedules and bedtimes and buses and filling out so. many. forms.

Take time out of the chaos to sit down and enjoy a family supper this weekend and debrief about the week. How about settling around a roast chicken?
Both SOVA Farm and R & Farm can supply a beautiful bird for the occasion.
Few roast chickens are as renowned as the late chef Judy Rodgers' roast chicken from Zuni Cafe in San Francisco. If you want something with a little more "zip" try Melissa Clark's green goddess roasted chicken. You can also just grill some chicken thighs and dress with Eltee's Goods tomato jam or a simmer sauce from Bombay Chutney.

As a side vegetable, may I recommend grabbing a variety of peppers from our farmers and slow roasting, them alongside your chicken, with onions, zucchini and eggplant, all cut up in equal size morsels and brushed with quality olive oil and market herbs?

Or, use the incredible corn at the Morgiewicz Produce stall to make this creamy corn risotto. We made this for friends last Saturday and served it with Mat and Ted Lee's ginger and chili grilled shrimp (from Pura Vida), and it was a big hit. I thought folding whipped cream into the risotto seemed over the top,  but it made the risotto so fluffy. This is a fantastic way to showcase this year's exceptionally sweet corn crop. I added a lot of fresh basil in addition to the suggested chives to the risotto because, why not?

Wil-Hi Farm is here with all things lamb. Pick up some of their ground lamb to make this Greek lamb with orzo, a one pot dish the whole family can enjoy.

We're spoiled for choice in the sweets department this week. It's cooled down just enough for La Petite Occasion and Marcelina Orange to return. And of course, Noble Pies and Silvia's Kitchen, too.

See you at the market!
