Bringing the Heat
What a difference a week makes! Last Saturday we were sweltering, struggling to stay hydrated (thanks for saving us, Freshly Made Juices!), and to find any spot of shade. This week's market forecast calls for cooler temps with sunny and dry skies. Perfect market weather.
And now that summer's heat seems to be abating, we thought we'd do a whimsical round-up of the delicious, heat-forward offerings at Saturday's market:
Bombay Chutney's Mint Chutney: made with just six simple ingredients (coriander, lime juice, mint leaves, green chilies, kosher salt, and our super secret special blend of spices). Scoop it up with naan chips or slather it on roast chicken.
Doc Pickles offers a Horseradish Half-Sour pickle that will make your taste buds sing! Serve them up, chilled, at your next picnic or BBQ.
Emmaline's Hot Sauce needs no real introduction. Twins Alice and Alicia, using a family recipe, create all-natural, artisinal sauces using fresh peppers, natural herbs, and spices that you can see, feel, smell, and taste. Drizzle some on your scrambled eggs, Tuesday tacos, or slather on slices of Bien Cuit's health loaf to make yourself a spectacular sandwich.
Larchmont Charcuterie's spicy Saucisson Sec is a bestseller in Hastings and around the Hudson Valley. Try some to find out why!
Freefall Sangria's Moscow Mule starts with their classic white sangria and adds a little kick with ginger beer. Yummy and so refreshing.
Mommo Pizza Truck's Explosion Pizza features tomato sauce, mozzarella, Calabrian soppresssata, gorgonzola, and hot honey. Please bring your appetite to the market! R&M Farm has a fine selection of delicious and fiery hot sausages: Hot Italian, Chipotle Bacon and Pepperjack cheese, and Mexican chorizo. Go ahead and fire up the grill!
Of course, if you've had quite enough heat for the summer, you've still got lots of options. Here are a few of our favorites:
Mom & Ice Pops offer the Bees Knees: a delightful combination of lemon and lavender (and owner Ingrid's favorite)
Don Carvajal's cold brew coffee; look for the cinnamon stick nestled in each bottle
Noble Pie How about a market-special Peanut Butter Cream Pie? What's that? Oh, just a buttery graham cracker crust filled with peanut butter cream and then drizzled dark chocolate ganache drizzled!
In other news, Luxx Chocolat is keeping Barbie mania going with her new pink hued collection. And our wonderful farmers are bringing the bounty of their August fields and orchards: corn, beets, greens, peppers, apples, peaches, plums and so much more. Wow unsuspecting dinner guests with this gorgeous, simple, and make-ahead-able Poached Peach dessert. MOMO Dressing is joining us; pick up some ginger dressing and a bag of crisply tart greens from Stoneberry Farm, add carrots from Sun Sprout, diced Bambino Cheese from McGrath Cheese and lunch is served!
Finally, a tiny bit of housekeeping: the staff and many volunteers at the market try our very best to keep shoppers safe in the busy parking lot. Please follow the signs: the southern-most bay of the Zinsser Lot is for vendor parking only and is coned off during market hours. The central and northern-most bay are for entering the lot. Cropsey Lane is for exiting only. Please drive slowly and be patient with your fellow shoppers. Thank you!
