THE MARKET IS OPEN TOMORROW!
Snow? Blizzard warnings? That just makes us want to cook MORE. The Hastings Market is ON for Saturday and we hope you will come out and support the vendors who are making the drive to the market.
It looks like we will have a full house of vendors so it will definitely be worth the trek.
Make soups and stews and, for goodness sake, BAKE. That is the best way to ride out a storm.
Some very sad news. The market lost a very special person this week.
Angus McDonald, the always dapper gentleman at the Hudson Valley Duck stand, known for his fascinating beard and boater hat, passed last Sunday.
He wasn't with our market long, but he made quite an impression. He liked to wander the plaza in his knee-length apron with samples of his perfectly-seared duck. And he loved to engage in philosophical banter with anyone who would listen. He leaves behind two little girls, Fiona and Wren. Wren sometimes came to the market with her dad and liked to hang out in other vendors' tents.
We will have a donation cup for his family at the Hudson Valley Duck table this week. We know we often ask for help but this market is nothing if not a "food family" and we hope we can count on you to give a little.
In his honor, this recipe for duck cassoulet, from Saveur Magazine.
And, because we are a food family, please consider preparing a meal for the Malarczyk children who lost their parents in a tragic accident last month. Here is the link to the sign up sheet:
Just add your name and phone number next to the date on which you plan on delivering dinner to them.
The Malarczyks' address is 77 Donald Drive.
Fitting:
White Pine Community Farm, a new vendor who specializes in medicinal teas, will be bringing some of their Milky Oats tea - credited for helping with everything from stress to sorrow.
Not sure why, but I have been hoarding onions this winter. I was tickled to find this Nancy Silverton recipe from Food & Wine for roasted onions. The fennel seed topping provides a nice counter crunch to the sweet, molten onions. A lovely side dish to serve with a Southtown Farm pork roast or flank steak from FARM Eats.
This is our current list of vendors for the weekend, but, understandably, things may change with the weather given how far some of our vendors travel to get here.
