June 6th

Dear shoppers,

Normally we would be heralding the launch of our 2020 summer season with lots of fun and fuss. But at this moment in time, when our nation is in such pain, fanfare doesn't seem right.

This is the week when our number of tents swells and our large-scale farmers return. Morgiewicz Produce is back, of course. The hope is that Sophie, the Morgiewicz matriarch, will stay home for a couple of weeks, just to be safe, according to her son, Joe. "But who knows if we can keep her from coming to Hastings" he says. We shall all find out on Saturday.

Wright's Farm is also returning (yay more eggs!) with, they hope, the first strawberries of the season. Our cold spring has made strawberries late to market this year. We hope this means they'll be extra sweet.

Harlem Valley Homestead is returning for the summer to give Ryan from
R&M Farm some much-needed relief in the meat department. Just in time, too. Ryan's wife's due date is June 11th. We shall see about that, too. Harlem Valley Homestead will be bringing beef and pork as well as beautiful mushrooms, field flowers, and some produce. I love that their website opens with a Wendell Berry quote: "What we need is here." That is often what I feel when I am at the market surrounded by good food and good neighbors. (I feel that even more this summer with my entire family working at the market with me.)

We know that while many of you are learning how to make bread, and baking up a storm, others are refining your mixology skills. Heimat Liqueur is here to help with their handcrafted spirits made with local fruit and produce - think rhubarb, raspberry and Bosc pear.

We hope that all of this great food will inspire you to linger at the table with your family and may even help in some small way to foster the important conversations that need to happen right now.

Be well. Stay safe. Spread love.

See you at the market!
