January 16th, 2020

So 2021 hasn't exactly started off as we'd hoped.

Thank goodness there's a market on Saturday.

Here are ten simple pleasures to seek out this week!

  1. Looking to eat a little more "lean?" consider picking up some ground turkey from R & M Farms. Then, make this lemony white bean soupwith turkey and greens. Perfect for these trying times.

  2. Jody's Kitchen and Homespun Chili have your back on those nights when you just. can't. make. another. meal.

  3. Aya Hummus breaks out a new flavor this week: it's called Nourish, says Jenny, "for the vitamin and mineral packed veggies (red bell pepper, ginger, garlic & pumpkin) and spices (cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, smoked paprika) that help to boost the immune system.

  4. Noble Pies has TWO special pies this week: a sweet and spicy Ottolenghi-inspired meat pie with ground beef and sausage, Middle-Eastern spices, caramelized onions and whole eggs all tucked in a savory butter crust.

And, Atlantic Beach Pie: a bright citrus pie with fresh whipped cream and a dusting of sea salt.

  5. Look for Auzerais at Blondery, for her delicious blondies, yes, but also to congratulate her for telling her story in The New York Times about the struggles black women chefs face in the world of fine dining.

  6. Pick up some creamery butter from Cow Bella Farm at the Cooperstown Cheese tent.

  7. Smoked seafood: either thick-cut spicy salmon or smoky scallops at Pura Vida or delicate smoked steelhead trout at the Hudson Valley Fisheries tent.

  8. The lovely minutina greens at Orchard Hill Organics. This specialty green adds a nice crunch to any salad and is also very good in stir-fries. Minutina was used in fancy jellies in America and England during Colonial times.

Try this recipe for fried egg atop a minutina salad with Japanese turnips (or better yet, turnip kimchi sauce from Forward Roots).

  9. Check out the fascinating mushrooms and mushrooms tinctures at Hodgins Harvest.

  10. Meet Jon, our newest farmer at the Premier Pastures tent. In the summer, Jon sells at the Chappaqua Farmer's Market. He is here for the winter with his nutrient-dense pasture-raised beef, pork and chicken. Jon uses regenerative agricultural practices that feed and restore the soil. If we're lucky, he'll bring his dog, Scout.

See you at the market!

And, please don't forget to nominate the Hastings Farmers Market for Best Farmer's Market in Westchester (category #34). You can do it here
