Pretty Pattypan

Is it just me? Does Pattypan Squash not sound like the plucky protagonist of a brightly-colored children’s picture book series? One who collects bugs and stands up to bullies? Maybe it’s just my conditioning; all those many, many, many nights, nestled with a still-damp-from-the bath little one, reading, “just one more,” over and over until one or both of us fell asleep. Not that I regret a single one of those nights, mind you!

So, pattypan squash is here (fictional heroine or not)! What to do with these colorful, funnily shaped veggies? Sure, they are the quintessential autumn table decoration, perched on brilliantly-hued fall leaves. But they’re also really tasty, versatile, and delicious! Try this Stuffed Pattypan Squash recipe you’ll find most of what you need at the market.

Are you cooking for the holiday? Your family will go crazy for this sweet and spicy roast chicken with dates and warm spices! Or this uber flavorful pot roast brisket with harissa. Either one would cozy up nicely to this tahini-smothered charred cabbage side dish. Make sure to keep your dessert seasonal. This olive oil plum cake would cap your feast quite nicely. And it's oh so pretty.

Maybe you’re going to be a guest? We’ve got you covered with your choice of hostess gifts! Charles Lazarus, of The Misshapened Bowl, is joining us for a rare market appearance. His found-wood, hand-crafted bowls are simply stunning works of art. You could also pick up some of Marcelina Orange’s luscious candied orange peels dipped in dark chocolate…if you want to be your host’s favorite guest! And, of course, one can never go wrong with flowers, which is where Sea Change Flower and Farm comes in. Pick one of their pre-assembled bouquets, or curate one of your own. Maggie is happy to help and advise.

Noomi Peanut Butter is back; just the ticket for after school snacks, slathered on a slice of Bien Cuit’s hearty health loaf, or for dipping crisp slices of Jonah Gold apples from Wrights Orchard. School schedules are getting hectic; save yourself some time and effort: stop by Homespun Chili to stock up on your favorite: Banzo Masala? Cocka-doodle-Bleu? They freeze beautifully and cook up really quickly for a last minute but hearty and delicious school-night supper...leaving you the time and energy for one more bedtime story and cuddle!

Since fall is here and this is a chance for new beginnings, consider going through your closets between now and this weekend and bring your clothing and household linens to the Green Tree Recycling Bin. Every little bit helps!
